India’s Deepak Punia defeated Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam in the final to beat India


Indian wrestler Deepak Punia won the gold medal in the 86 kg weight category by defeating Pakistan’s Muhammad Inam in the final. Commonwealth Games 2022 Friday in Birmingham. With this, India got its third gold medal of the day. Earlier, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia had won the gold medal. In the final, Deepak defeated Inam 3-0.

Punia’s Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign was off to a good start as he defeated Matthew Oxenham of New Zealand in his men’s freestyle 86kg category match to enter the quarter-finals on Friday. Deepak was at his best in this match which lasted for three minutes and 22 seconds. He defeated his rival from New Zealand 10-0. Oxenham did not even get a chance to break out of Punia’s grip and walked away without a point. Technical prowess-wise, Deepak was great for Oxenham and this factor helped him win.

Naib Subedar Deepak Punia is an Indian freestyle wrestler and Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Indian Army who won a silver medal at the 2019 World Wrestling Championships in the freestyle 86 kg category and a place in the 2020 Summer Olympics. He was born in Jhajjar district of Haryana. In Tokyo Olympics 2020, he lost the bronze medal match to MN Amin of San Marino. At the Wrestling World Championships, Deepak settled for silver after being ruled out of the 86kg final due to injury, where he was to face Iran’s Hassan Yazdani.
