NMP Issue: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said he sees no reason to oppose the National Monetization Pipeline (NMP) and hoped that the bidding process for it will be transparent. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday announced the National Monetization Plan (NMP) of Rs 6 lakh crore. Under this, monetization of passenger trains, railway stations to airports, roads and stadiums are included. Resources will be mobilized and properties will be developed by involving private companies in these infrastructure sectors.
Omar Abdullah said, “I do not see any reason to oppose such a scheme under which such capital is to be monetised, which otherwise is not giving me a suitable benefit. If this property would be privatized, I would have asked the government questions.
It is important to understand the difference between privatization and monetization: Omar Abdullah
He was replying to a question on the NMP scheme of the central government. Abdullah said that it is important to understand the difference between privatization and monetization. “Under monetization, a property is leased out, but the ownership of that property is not transferred,” he said. The National Conference vice president said he expected the bidding system to be transparent.
