The officials of the state CEO’s office informed the Election Commission during a virtual meeting. Sources gave this information on Wednesday.

A senior state government official said, “The festive season will continue from October 10 to October 24 and it is impossible to hold elections at that time, so the state has asked the commission to hold elections before the start of the festive season.” Said, “We have more than a month’s time. If the commission issues a notification now (for holding by-elections to seven seats), then it is possible to hold elections before Durga Puja.

Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra held a digital meeting with State Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi on Wednesday. Deputy Election Commissioner Sudip Jain, in-charge of West Bengal Assembly elections, and senior officials of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office attended the meeting. The meeting was organized to understand the state’s preparedness and the situation for holding by-elections in seven assembly constituencies.

Voting is to be held in seven assembly seats in West Bengal. These include two seats where elections were postponed after the death of candidates during the assembly elections. The by-polls to five other seats in the state are due due to the death or resignation of the sitting MLAs. The ruling Trinamool Congress wants the bypolls at the earliest. In fact, Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had lost from Nandigram in the assembly elections and she needs to be elected as a member of the assembly by November 5. He was defeated by BJP candidate Shubhendu Adhikari in Nandigram seat.
